I can’t remember not wanting to pursue a career in science – although I wish I’d known more about the different branches of engineering before I went to university, because I probably would have loved a career in something like water engineering or industrial microbiology. That’s a lesson for anyone thinking about going to university in the future – think outside the box. There are a zillion different career options, so don’t limit your thinking to the subjects you learn at school, like I did at the time. It’s never impossible to change career path later, so perhaps industrial microbiology could still be on the cards for me…?

I’ve wanted to be a pharmacist and a Blue Peter presenter since i was 3. I’m still working on the Blue Peter bit!

I knew I wanted to pursue a career in science when I was in Year 8. Science was my favourite subject at school and all the teachers were great. At first I thought I wanted to be a biology teacher but when my friend became ill in Year 8, I wanted to find out why and how and if there was anything I could do to help her so this was really the tipping point for me. Since then, I knew I wanted to be a science researcher and I have never looked back! I love my job and being a researcher, I even did it for free for a year!
