It’s a very good, but tricky question! I’m not a specialist, but essentially, this is a consequence of the theory of General Relativity that Einstein put together in 1915. The way time passes is changed if you are close to a very massive body. This has been verified using very precise atomic clocks in orbit around the Earth.
Perhaps it’s not necessary to look for a “visual” representation of something like ‘space-time’ warping itself, because it’s impossible to see this correctly. A more useful formulation, I think, is to say that the fabric of space-time is changed close to massive bodies.
