• Question: do we have any idea of what gravity actually is and how it works (as opposed to simply describing what it does)

So gravity is simply a really strong magnetic force, all large objects produce a small electrical and gravitational magnetic force (even us, you can see the electrical bit if you turn a tap on to a very slow stream and put your finger close, you will see the water bend towards it). For the Earth, because it has a high iron content especially at the core its basically got a giant magnet in the centre. Other planets with less magnetic elements will have less gravity (but due to their size will still have some).

As with every magnet though we have 2 poles, and so theres also some repulsion from the magnetism. Its a delicate balance of the attraction and repulsion that keep things in orbit around each other in space (and stops the planets all colliding or being drawn to each other 🙂 )

Hope this helps, I’m sure Nicolas will have some good info too 🙂
