Last year Cancer Research UK opened a new shop near my home town, so I arranged for a very senior cancer researcher to attend the opening and give a little speech about the work he does, and how important it is for CRUK to raise funds to make cancer research happen. There were 3 or four local journalists there, and a couple of photographers, so I was briefly interviewed, and my picture was in the local paper (along with about 6 other people). Other than that, no, not really, but I’ve arranged for a lot of other people’s work to make it into the papers. Last year I organised a two-page spread article in a national Danish newspaper, all about the research my company is doing to find a cure for a couple of different rare diseases. That was really exciting. I also know a lot of university researchers here in Denmark, and at the moment I’m trying to get some publicity for a really cool piece of work which has just been published in a medical journal. It’s hard work to convince journalists that a science story is worth being in the news, because they are mostly only interested in controversy or something that’s glamorous.
