      Hi Polina, Good question! I’d say that black holes are what remains of something that collapses under its own weight to a very small volume. For instance, a star may, at the end of its life, be crushed by its own weight to something quite small that becomes a black hole. The main characteristic of a black hole is that gravity around a black hole is very, very strong. So strong that not even light can escape it. Which is why it looks black.
